There’s nothing more uplifting in the cold winter months than illuminations. That’s why I think Christmas light trails are one of the most magical festive experiences you can give your family. In this post I’ve gathered some of the best trails happening at places around the country in 2023.

As I’m publishing this post well before the summer don’t be surprised if some trails are marked as still to be confirmed. I’ll be updating this guide as the year progresses.

Having said that, ticket sales for some of the most popular trails are already live. Don’t delay in booking your tickets for these Christmas events happening in 2023. They’re bound to get snapped up fast.

This year’s illuminated trail will be shining the spotlight on Shuttleworth’s Collection of heritage aircraft and vehicles.

There will be refreshments available from the Coffee Pod, before you make your way through the hangars. Along the way, discover the history of aviation and the story of Shuttleworth, in a world of festive light and sound.

Wales’ biggest festive light trail is back for 2023 and with a host of new installations, a fresh route and a new Christmas village Bute will shine brighter than ever.

This year there are on and off peak tickets to suit different budgets.

There will also be street food and drink stalls.

Here’s where to find Christmas light trails in Cambridgeshire:

Anglesey Abbey Winter Lights

The Lost Words and The Lost Spells poems, music and illustrations will thread throughout the light trails at Anglesey Abbey this year.

Visitors to Winter Lights will see magical projections of nature illustrations created by the award-winning projectionist team Ross Ashton and Karen Monid, as well as new versions of songs and poems from the books throughout the route.

There will be independent street food vendors in the Orchard area so you can refuel after your night-time adventures.

Visit Wimple National Trust estate in Royston and see it like never before with a new trail of magical lights illuminating the gardens.

The after-dark Illuminations trail that will bring the estate to life with over a million twinkling lights while the Mansion House will be decorated for Christmas.

Lights at Bolesworth

Christmas lights at Bolesworth Estate

Bolesworth’s grounds will again be transformed into a festive wonderland, festooned in seasonal sparkle and yuletide cheer for a month of unforgettable winter magic.

There will be a spectacular light show incorporating Bolesworth Castle itself and a unique water display on the lake. The display is made up of thousands of lights and follows an accessible route.

There will also be a fairground, Christmas market and champagne bar.

The Christmas light trail returns to Delamere Forest for a second year with chandelier dance floors, firework trees and 42 metre prism tunnel of neon lights.

Tickets are on sale now for this popular illuminated trail which is returning for a sixth year to this historic National Trust property.

In 2023 there’s a new light and sound installations.

Tickets sell out fast each year, therefore early booking is advised.

Lightopia at Heaton Park

Lightopia take place in Heaton Park in Manchester and promises to be better than each year.

Embark on a journey around the new themed magical light trail on a route through the parklands, showcasing bright immersive installations, interactive lanterns, colourful lasers, and water shows.

Delve into a Norwegian fairy-tale land with a multi-coloured, glowing castle towering high in the heart of the zoo.

Next meet the glowing wolves surrounded by the sun, moon and stars, and a giant snow leopard guarding a snowy mountain at the end of a light tunnel.

This year Charlestown is the home of the UK’s longest tunnel of indoor festive light.

As well as this dazzling display at the Shiwreak Museum you’ll find a winter wonderland of decorated rooms, a German Christmas Market and even snow.

In 2022, Belfast Botanic Gardens hosted Northern Ireland’s first festival of light.

The long trail twisted through the garden, sparkling with more than 18,000 light bulbs, 25,000 meters of neon tubes, 10,000 meters of tree lighting, and some 160 lantern artisans never seen in Northern Ireland before.

Glow Marwell 2023 is going to be bigger and better than ever with half a million twinkling lights, brand new illuminations and interactive elements.

Children of all ages will be able to play in an LED playground, walk across light-up stepping stones, and strike a pose on Rainbow Road.

This year’s multicoloured light tunnel spans an incredible 36 metres and our specially created Enchanted Tree will tower overhead.

Father Christmas will also be there in a new grotto.

The Illuminated Garden Adventure at West Green House Gardens

This extraordinary mile long light trail at West Green House has lots of new features in 2023 including thousands of lights telling the story of Alice in Wonderland.

There will be giant 10 to 15ft high fountains dancing to music on the lake.

The garden’s Five Bridges will become tunnels of light with creatures beneath, while in the Paradise Garden will be transformed into the flamingo’s crocket lawn.

Warming drinks, hot food and treats may be purchased along the trail.

Staunton Farm will be transformed into a magical illuminated light trail with mesmerising light installations around the grounds.

Just 20 minutes on the train from Kings Cross station, this historic National Trust property will, host a light trail this year.

In 42 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland you’ll find a winter wonderland of magical light.

Polar at Robin Hill

Embark on a magical journey as Pippa the polar bear goes on an adventure at Robin Hill.

Christmas at Kew, a much-loved highlight of London’s festive calendar, returns for its eleventh year this November.

The 2023 light trail features new installations, illuminating Kew Gardens’ UNESCO World Heritage landscape with vibrant bursts of colour and over a million twinkling lights.

Immerse yourselves in sparkling tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, glitter balls and trees drenched in jewel-like colour on your way to the panoramic Palm House light display.
